Abstract

This study proposed the design of Fosterhiers Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Akure through the application of therapeutic architecture principles. Drug addiction and substance abuse have become major social and public health challenges in Nigeria, resulting in psychological, emotional, and physical disorders among affected individuals. Conventional rehabilitation facilities often focus primarily on medical treatment without adequate consideration for environmental and architectural factors that support healing and recovery. Therapeutic architecture emphasizes the design of healthcare environments that promote physical, emotional, and psychological well-being through natural lighting, ventilation, landscaping, spatial organization, and patient-centered design strategies. The study explored how architectural design can contribute to rehabilitation outcomes, patient comfort, and social reintegration. Findings revealed that integrating therapeutic architectural principles into rehabilitation facilities can enhance recovery processes, reduce stress, encourage social interaction, and improve the overall healing experience of patients. The study concludes that therapeutic architecture provides a sustainable and human-centered approach to rehabilitation facility design. It recommends the incorporation of healing environments in healthcare and rehabilitation infrastructure across Nigeria.
