Abstract

ABSTRACT The increasing demand for sustainable and renewable energy solutions in educational institutions highlights the importance of implementing green technologies. This project focuses on the design, construction, and installation of a smart 5kV solar power system for the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at Akwa Ibom State University. The primary goal is to provide a reliable, eco-friendly power supply that meets the department’s energy needs while reducing dependency on grid power and fossil fuels. The system is designed with high-efficiency photovoltaic panels, a smart energy management system, and an optimized battery storage unit to ensure continuous power supply even in off-peak sunlight conditions. The integration of an intelligent monitoring and control system allows real-time tracking of energy generation, consumption, and storage, ensuring maximum efficiency and minimal energy wastage. This project will not only provide a sustainable energy solution for the department but also serve as a practical learning tool for students, enhancing their understanding of solar power systems, embedded systems, and IoT-based energy management. The outcome of this installation will reduce electricity costs, enhanced energy reliability, and contributes to the university’s environmental sustainability initiatives. The implementation will involve a comprehensive approach to system design, load analysis, site evaluation, component selection, system integration, and installation, ensuring the system operates at optimal efficiency. Upon completion, the project will demonstrate the potential of solar energy in academic institutions and offer a practical demonstration of smart energy technologies for future engineers.
