HAEMATOLOGICAL AND SERUM LIPID PROFILE OF WEST AFRICAN DWARF (WAD) BUCKS FED DIETS CONTAINING SOLVENT EXTRACTED PALM KERNEL MEAL IN INTENSIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of solvent extracted palm kernel meal on haematological parameters and serum profile of West African dwarf bucks in intensive management system. Sixteen (16) WAD bucks aged between 9-12months were used for the experiment. The bucks where randomly assigned to four treatment with one buck per replicate in a completely Randomized Design (CRD). The four experimental diets were formulated to contain solvent extracted palm kernel mealat 0, 5, 10 and 15% respectively. The experiment lasted for 90 days. At the end of the 90 days trial, 10mls of blood was collected through jugular veins from four (4) bucks randomly selected from each treatment group out of which 5ml was emptied into the bottles with (ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid) EDTA to prevent coagulation for haematological analysis and the remaining 5ml was dispensed into plain (anticoagulant free) bottles and labelled properly according to the treatment group for serum biochemical analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), Red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and neutrophils were significantly (p0.05) different between treatment groups. In the Serum biochemical indices, Total cholesterol, Total protein and albumin were significantly different (p
