Abstract

This study focused on the design and implementation of a smart student expense tracking system to address common financial management challenges faced by university students. The system was developed using React.js for the frontend, Node.js and Express.js for the backend, Zustand for state management, and PostgreSQL for data persistence. Gemini AI was integrated to provide personalized financial insights, and OCR technology enabled automated receipt scanning. The prototyping methodology guided development, allowing continuous feedback and iteration from student users. Key features included user authentication, transaction logging, budgeting tools, AI-generated suggestions, and PDF data export. Security measures such as JWT authentication and bcrypt password hashing were implemented to protect user data. Usability testing confirmed the system’s alignment with student needs, particularly in promoting responsible spending and enhancing financial literacy. Challenges encountered included OCR accuracy, AI prompt optimization, and real-time UI updates, all of which informed critical lessons in modular design, security-first development, and iterative testing. Ultimately, the system successfully empowered students with intuitive tools for managing expenses, while offering a scalable foundation for future enhancements such as bank API integration and mobile responsiveness. The project contributes a practical, technology-driven solution for fostering financial discipline among students.
