ASSESSEMENT OF DISEASES OF SMALL RUMINANT ANIMALS DURING RAINING SEASON IN THREE WARDS IN SHANONO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KANO STATE
Abstract
Small ruminants (sheep and goats) are a vital component of livestock production in Shanono Local
Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, Nigeria. However, diseases pose a significant threat to
their productivity and profitability. This descriptive study investigated the common diseases
affecting small ruminants in Three selected villages (Tsaure, Leni, and Shanono) in Shanono LGA.
A survey was conducted to identify the prevalent diseases, and the results showed that foot rot and
pneumonia were the most common diseases affecting small ruminants in the area, with high
morbidity and mortality rates. The study highlights the need for effective disease control measures,
including vaccination programs, improved husbandry practices, and veterinary services, to reduce
the burden of these diseases and improve the overall health and productivity of small ruminants
in Shanono LGA.
