Abstract

Asthma is a disease of chronic air way inflammation causing symptoms of paroxysmal airflow obstruction, airway hyper-responsiveness to irritative stimuli, wheezing, chest tightncss and coughing. The aim of the study is to evaluate the hacmatological parameters in asthmatic patients in Madonma University Teaching Hospital, Elele. A total number of 60asthmatic patients were recruited for this study. 2ml of blood sample was collected from the patients using a 2ml syringe and delivered into an EDTA container. All subjects were tested for PCV,Hb,TWBC,Differential count, platelet count values. The mean platelet count,PCV,WBC,HB and RBC of the non-asthmatic patients were (353.5000±16.17697 SD=51.15608),(40.8000±1.24544 SD=3.93841),(6.4000±0.58119 SD=1.83787),(15.8000±0.75719 SD=2.39444)and(4.8000±0.10646 SD=0.33665) respectively. The mean platelet count,PCV,WBC,HB and RBC of asthmatic patients were (454.7000 ±21.64104SD=68.43497),(40.5000±1.24944 SD=3.95109),(11.3000±1.48361 SD=4.69160),(14.5000±0.89753 SD=2.83823),and(4.6200±0.18726 SD=0.59217)respectively.In conclusion, variation of multiple haematological parameters in asthma patients has indicated that multiple pathways and components are associated with the pathogenesis of asthma.Differential expression of haematological parameters is not asthma specific because these parameters also vary in other diseases or pathological conditions.
