EVALUATION OF ZINC AND COPPER LEVELS IN STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS INFECTED PATIENTS ATTENDING MADONNA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (MUTH) ELELE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This research investigated the level of zinc and copper in patients infected with
staphylococcus aureus infection. Samples were collected from 14 adult infected with
staphylococcus aureus of both male and female gender ranging from age 20-50, and also 14
healthy adults of both sexes used as the control subjects. Estimations of zinc and copper were
done using Agilent FS240AA Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer according to the method
of APHA 1998. The results were expressed as mean (± SD). Student’s t-test and one-way
analysis of variance were used to compare the differences in the mean between the groups.
Significant level was considered at p 0.05) difference in the mean values of copper
(0.060±0.04) in test subjects when compared with control subjects0.048±0.045. Also there was
no significant (p>0.05) difference in the mean values of zinc(0.191±0.060) in test subjects
when compared with control subjects (0.232±0.306). Therefore, from the results of this study
it can be concluded that staphylococcus infection didn’t affect the level of copper or zinc.
