Abstract

ABSTRACTS Blood pressure monitoring is vital to ensuring healthiness of the human cardiovascular system, but availability of a simple and low cost heart beat monitoring device that does not require expert or medical personnel to handle. Hypertension is a major health concern worldwide. Accurate blood pressure monitoring is crucial for diagnosing and managing of health. With the objective of designing a low cost, portable, and user friendly microcontroller based blood pressure monitoring system with a display screen. This paper describes the design and construction of a microcontroller based blood pressure monitoring system with a display screen. Methodology used microcontroller (MCU)-Arduino Uno or equivalent, blood pressure sensor –Non-invasive cuff based sensor (MPX5010), display screen-LCD (16x2), power supply (battery 9v), and programming – C++.System design; MCU reads blood pressure data, data processing and calculation of systolic, diastolic, and pulse rate, display result on LCD screen, alarm and warning system for abnormal reading. Hardware component; MCU board, blood pressure sensor module, display screen, power supply and battery holder, cable and connectors, enclosure and mounting hardware. Software features are user interface for easy operation, calibration and configuration option, data logging and storage, alarm and warning thresholds, unit conversion (mmHg to kPa). System specification: accuracy (±5mmHg), resolution (1mmHg), measurement (0 – 300mmHg), power consumption (
