DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A CAMPUS NAVIGATION APPLICATION FOR JABU USING GOOGLE MAP AND MAPBOX API
Abstract
This project presents the design and development of a campus navigation application for
Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), using Google Maps and Mapbox APIs. The
idea was born from the common difficulties students, staff, and visitors face when trying
to locate buildings or navigate around the campus—especially during times of
construction, events, or schedule changes.
The goal of the project is to create a mobile application that provides accurate, real-time,
and offline navigation support. Google Maps was used for live location tracking and
route planning, while Mapbox allowed for a customized map layout that reflects the
unique structure of JABU’s campus and can function without internet access. The app
also features a reporting system where users can flag blocked paths or ongoing activities,
helping to keep the map up-to-date.
The app was built using React Native, Node.js, MongoDB, and APIs from Google and
Mapbox. Testing showed that the app performs well under different conditions and helps
users move more efficiently across campus.
This project contributes to the growing field of smart campus systems by offering a
model that is practical, cost-effective, and suited for universities in Nigeria. It improves
campus mobility, reduces stress, and saves time, especially for new students or visitors
unfamiliar with the environment.
