ONLINE GAMBLING AND THE ATTITUDE OF AKWA IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TOWARDS ACADEMICS
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of online gambling on the academic attitudes and performance of students at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU). The Theory of Planned Behaviour and Social Learning Theory were adopted as theoretical frameworks for the study. A survey research design was employed targeting 400 students from a population of 5,838 undergraduates. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that online gambling negatively affected students' academic attitudes and performance. Significant percentages of respondents admitted skipping classes, losing motivation to complete assignments and experiencing a decline in CGPA due to gambling activities. Frequent gambling was linked with poor grades, absenteeism and poor academic engagement. The study concluded that online gambling has become a serious concern among university students with severe academic consequences. The study recommended awareness campaigns, stricter control measures, counselling services and time management programmes for students.
