EFFECTS OF VISION IMPAIRMENT ON THE AGED IN OJO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE
Abstract
Vision impairment among the elderly is a significant public concern worldwide, including in Ojo local government area of Lagos State. This abstract highlights the prevalence, causes, and challenges associated with vision impairment in the elderly population of Ojo. Despite advancement in healthcare, the aging population remains vulnerable to vision-related conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, among others. Limited access to eye care services, lack of awareness, and socio economic factors exacerbate the burden of vision impairment in this demographic. Additionally, cultural beliefs and stigma surrounding eye diseases may deter individuals from seeking timely diagnosis and treatment. Addressing vision impairment among the elderly requires a multi-faceted approach, including comprehensive eye screenings, community education programs, and improving access to affordable eye care services.
