Abstract

This study investigated the influence of TikTok usage on the academic performance of students at Benson Idahosa University, aiming to explore the extent of their engagement with the platform, the motivations behind its use, the impacts on academic performance, and potential strategies for mitigating negative effects. Grounded in the Uses and Gratification Theory, the research employed a survey design with a questionnaire to collect data from students. Key findings indicate that TikTok is widely used among students, primarily for entertainment, creativity, and social connection, highlighting its role in fostering community engagement. However, the study also reveals that while TikTok can serve as a source of distraction, hindering concentration and time management, some students recognise its educational value, suggesting that it can enhance their learning experience when used appropriately. Based on these findings, the study recommended that university administrators implement educational workshops focused on effective social media usage, faculty members integrate discussions about social media's impact on academic performance into their curricula, and parents engage in open conversations with their children about their social media habits.
