CONTEMPORARY CHIEFTIANCY DISPUTE IN IBADAN (2000-2024)
Abstract
This study examines contemporary chieftaincy disputes in Ibadan, Nigeria, focusing on the period from 2000 to 2024. The research explores the complex intersection of traditional authority and modern governance in Nigeria's largest Yoruba city.Ibadan was founded in 1829 as a military outpost for warriors from different nations, serving as a refuge during the Yoruba civil wars and the collapse of the Oyo Empire. Unlike other Yoruba kingdoms with hereditary monarchies, Ibadan developed a unique meritocratic system based on military prowess rather than royal lineage. The city operates through a rotational chieftaincy system with two main lines: the Balogun line (military chiefs) and the Otun line (civil chiefs), with the position of Olubadan alternating between these lines.
The study identifies several critical issues in contemporary chieftaincy disputes such as the 2017 controversial decision by former Governor Abiola Ajimobi to elevate some Ibadan high chiefs to the status of kings without Olubadan's full approval caused a major rift within the traditional institution. Also the disagreements over who qualifies for certain titles often end up in court, delaying appointments and causing instability.
In addition the traditional titles that were previously awarded based on merit, seniority, and community service are now often influenced by financial power and political connections. Which led to the Younger generations often challenging the relevance of traditional structures in a rapidly modernizing society.
