CONSTRUCTION AND APPLICATION OF THREE-PHASE TRANSFORMER TRAINING KITS FOR ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS LABORATORIES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of this research is to designed and constructed an affordable three-phase transformer training kit for engineering laboratories in polytechnics. The kit uses standard single-phase transformers to bridge theoretical learning with practical experimentation. It enables a series of key experiments: determining efficiency and voltage regulation via direct loading; performing loss separation using Sumpner's test; converting three-phase to six-phase via diametrical connections; and achieving two-phase conversion using a Scott connection. Additional tests for polarity and turns ratio are also included. The system utilizes accessible components like 1 kVA transformers, variacs, standard meters, and loads, ensuring low cost and easy replication. Test results validated theoretical principles, showing peak efficiency at 50-75% loading, successful six-phase conversion, and accurate two-phase outputs with a 90" phase shift. With an estimated total cost of N822,500, the modular kit provides a safe, hands-on platform for students to explore transformer losses, phase conversion techniques, and energy efficiency. It effectively prepares learners for real-world applications in power systems and industrial installations.
