DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A CCTV-BASED SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM FOR ENHANCED SECURITY: A CASE STUDY OF THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The safety of learning environments has become increasingly important in response to the rising infrastructural, technological and human resource demands. This project focuses on the design and installation of a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system within the Computer Science Department of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun. Motivated by ongoing security problems like theft, unauthorized access, and limited visibility within security-sensitive areas, the project aimed to offer a reliable and sustainable security solution.
The system design involved a detailed site survey, risk assessment, and strategic placement of cameras. The installation comprised eight high-definition cameras, a 16-way Digital Video Recorder (DVR), and a 2TB external hard disk. To ensure seamless functionality, the system was integrated with the existing solar power system of the department. Real-time monitoring and centralized viewing of recorded material were supported through a single dedicated control display unit, and staff members trained to use the system after installation.
The project not only enhanced the departmental security architecture but also served as a field exercise for practicing theoretical concepts in areas such as hardware integration, networking, and system deployment. With its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and educational value, the project offers a model for other departments and institutions to emulate when increasing safety through technology-based solutions.
