EFFECT OF ALUMINIUMTOXICITYON HAEMATOLOGICAL INDICES OF ALBINO WISTAR RATS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study was aimed at investigating the effects of aluminum toxicity on the haematological
indices of albino Wistar rats. A total of 25 adult male albino wistar rats divided into five groups of
5 rats per group were used: group I(control) received 0.2 ml distilled water while Groups II- V (test
groups) were administered 331mg/kg (0.21ml), 662mg/kg (0.43ml),993mg/kg (0.6ml) and
1324mg/kg (1.46ml) of aluminum chloridle with an average weight of 150g to 174g for the
duration of nine (9) days. The blood samples of the rats were obtained by cardiac puncture for
analysis. Using an auto hematology analyzer, sixteen blood parameters including white blood cell
(WBC) count, red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin(HGB)concentration, hematocrit (HCT) levels,
mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH). mean corpuscular
hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), red cell
distribution width (RDW) and other parameters were determined. The results were analyzed to
determine the correlation between aluminum exposure and changes in these haematological
indices. The analysis revealed non-significant changes (p>0.05) in WBC, RBC, and HCT levels across
all groups. HGB levels showed non-significant increases in groups 3 and 5, but decreases in groups
2 and 4. MCV indicated a non-significant increase in group 2, while MCH showed non-significant
increases in all groups. MCHC levels showed a significant increase(p
