Abstract
Abstract
This study is on “exposure of the youths to season 9 big Brother Naija and its influence on moral
value and lifestyles”. The study was conducted specifically within Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria,
focusing on youths residing in the community to provide insights on how television influences
young people across different socio-economic and cultural settings. The researcher employed
both quantitative and qualitative methods for eliciting data from a sample size of 400
respondents. The Simple random sampling technique was adopted for this study in selecting the
400 respondents with the use of Questionnaire and in-depth interview as instrument. Findings
from the study showed that regular consumption of BBN influenced youths' attitudes toward
societal norms, with many adopting liberal views on topics such as relationships and dressing.
Also, BBN’s representation of various lifestyles and behaviors influenced how participants
perceived ethical boundaries; often normalizing behavior that may conflict with traditional
moral expectations. The study concluded that that BBN Season 9 significantly impacts the moral
values and lifestyles of youths in Offa. The extent and nature of the influence depend largely on
individual consumption habits and interpretive frameworks. The study however recommended
that Youths should be educated on critical media consumption to enable them to discern positive
lessons while avoiding potentially harmful influences. Parents on the other hand should engage
in constant conversations with their wards about the content they consume and provide guidance
to ensure alignment with desired society acceptable moral standards. Media regulatory agencies
should ensure that reality shows like BBN adhere to ethical broadcasting standards to minimize
exposure to inappropriate contents.
