Abstract

The various communities which later became known as Nigeria in 1960 had different ways and methods of organization and engaged in a number of socio-economic activities as a means of livelihood. This scenario was also applicable among the people of Ikot Ekpene from the distant past. There were changes in the socio- economic affairs of the people from 1960, which marked the end of colonial rule in Nigeria, to 2015, which was a terminal date for the tenure of an indigene of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District who was saddled with the management of affairs in Akwa Ibom State. This project therefore examines the socio-economic development that took place within this period and enhanced the livelihood of the people. The work interrogated both primary and secondary sources, which were collated and analyzed. The research adopts a critical analytical approach. The study reveals that the Ikot Ekpene people organized themselves more effectively in response to the changes that occurred over time.
