Abstract

This study was carried out to assess the occurrence of ruminal impaction among slaughtered camels at the Kano Main Abattoir. A total of 50 camels were examined over a period of four weeks. Post-mortem examination of the rumen revealed the presence of various non-digestible foreign materials, which were indicative of ruminal impaction. The data collected were categorized based on week of slaughter, age and sex of the camels, body condition score, and the nature of impacted materials. The study revealed that 22 out of 50 camels (44%) had one or more forms of ruminal impaction. The most frequently encountered materials were cloth pieces (68.2%), polyethene (59.1%), and bones (45.5%). Older camels (7 years and above) and males were found to be more affected. Furthermore, most affected camels had poor body condition, suggesting a correlation between health status and ruminal impaction. The findings suggest that camels grazing near refuse dumps or urban areas are at high risk due to exposure to waste.
