Abstract

A 56 day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of Aqueous Gmelina arborea leaf extract (AGALE) on the serum biochemical and haematological indices of West African Dwarf (WAD) sheep. A total of twenty (20) WAD sheep were randomly allotted into four treatment groups; T1, T2, T3, T4 of five (5) animals per treatment in a Completely Randomized Design. T1 served as the control with no AGALE, while T2, T3, and T4, received 5, 10 and 15mL AGALE, respectively. Blood samples were collected from three (3) randomly selected WAD sheep per treatment at the end of the trial for evaluation of serum biochemical and haematological indices. Results showed that administration of AGALE had no significant (p> 0.05) influence on the serum biochemical indices except the total protein, urea, cholesterol, triglyceride, creatinine, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein . Animals administered 0mL (7.05mg/dL), 10mL (7.00mg/dL) and 15mL (7.20mg/dL) AGALE recorded similar total protein values but significantly higher than those on 5mL (6.75mg/dL) administration. The urea (26.00-34.00mg/dL) and creatinine (0.60-0.75mg/dL) values obtained in this study increased across the treatment groups. The WAD sheep administered 5mL AGALE recorded the highest HDL (13.50mg/dL) and cholesterol (86.00mg/dL) values when compared with other treatment groups. No significant difference was observed on the haematological indices of WAD sheep evaluated in this study except in Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Red Blood Cell (RBC) and Mean Cell Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). The PCV (34.00-46.00%), RBC (7.84-10.21x103) and MCHC (32.47-34.25x10-3) of WAD sheep observed in this study varied across the treatments. It can therefore be concluded that AGALE can be used as a natural supplement for improving the health and productivity of WAD sheep without adverse effects on liver and kidney functions.
