Abstract

This research investigates the effect of corporate governance on employee productivity, focusing on First Bank Plc, Ibadan, Oyo State. The study aims to examine how governance mechanisms influence workforce efficiency and performance, with particular emphasis on board composition, ownership structure, and management transparency. Specifically, the objectives include assessing the extent to which board composition influences employee productivity, examining the effect of ownership structure, investigating the relationship between management transparency/accountability and productivity, and determining the impact of governance practices on employee motivation and efficiency. A survey research design was adopted, involving a census of all 28 staff members at the Dugbe branch. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The findings reveal that corporate governance has a significant effect on employee productivity, as good governance practices foster accountability, fairness, and transparency, which in turn enhance employee trust, motivation, and performance. The study also shows that ethical leadership and fair corporate policies are essential for improving job satisfaction and commitment, while weak governance practices negatively affect employee morale and efficiency. However, board structure alone was found to have no statistically significant relationship with organizational efficiency. The study concludes that sound corporate governance is a critical driver of sustainable employee productivity. It recommends that management strengthen governance frameworks by promoting ethical leadership, ensuring board independence, enhancing transparency, and establishing clear accountability mechanisms to foster a productive work environment. These findings have practical implications for bank management, policymakers, and corporate leaders seeking to enhance organizational performance through improved governance.
