Abstract

The increasing demand for reliable and sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria, particularly in academic institutions, has highlighted the need for alternative power sources to mitigate frequent grid failures and high operational costs associated with diesel generators. This project focuses on the design, installation, and commissioning of a 5kVA grid-assisted photovoltaic (PV) system for the Head of Department’s office in the Faculty of Engineering at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City. This system was developed majorly to ensure continuous, clean, and sustainable power supply for critical administrative functions. The system integrates solar panels, a battery bank, a charge controller, and a hybrid inverter to ensure uninterrupted power supply during grid outages, thereby enhancing productivity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The design process involved detailed load estimation, solar resource assessment, component sizing (PV modules, charge controller, inverter, and battery bank), and system simulation using industry-standard tools. The installation phase adhered to national electrical codes and best practices for safety and efficiency. Post-installation performance evaluation showed significant reduction in grid power usage and enhanced energy reliability. The project demonstrates the viability of medium-scale solar systems in institutional settings and provides a scalable model for renewable energy adoption in Nigeria’s educational sector.
