PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN CHAMPION BREWERIES, UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
Performance appraisal plays a central role in managing human resources in organizations, with its ultimate goal being the optimization of worker productivity and organizational growth. This study investigated the relationship between performance appraisal systems and employee performance in manufacturing organizations, focusing explicitly on Champion Breweries, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The research was prompted by underlying organizational challenges within the company, notably a historical lack of employee participation in corporate goal setting and an inadequate performance feedback mechanism, which led to goal ambiguity, employee dissatisfaction, and diminished commitment.
To systematically address these issues, three specific objectives were formulated: to determine the relationship between employee performance and management by objectives (MBO), 360-degree feedback, and goal-setting practices. Methodologically, the study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design. The target population comprised all 326 personnel within the organization. Applying the Taro Yamane formula, a sample size of 180 respondents was derived, and a simple random sampling technique was utilized to eliminate selection bias and ensure equal participation opportunities. Data collection was executed using structured questionnaires based on a Likert scale format. Out of 180 distributed questionnaires, 130 copies (72%) were successfully retrieved and deemed fit for analysis. The collected data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) coefficient tested at a 0.05 level of significance.
The empirical findings revealed that performance appraisal dimensions have highly significant positive relationships with employee output. Management by Objectives (MBO) yielded a correlation of r = 0.875 (p < 0.05), indicating a very strong link to performance when workers participate in goal definitions. The 360-degree feedback mechanism also demonstrated a robust positive relationship with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.828 (p < 0.05), proving that multi-source evaluations enhance behavioral adjustment and clarity. Finally, goal setting yielded a significant correlation of r = 0.724 (p < 0.05), confirming its role as a key motivator. Based on these outcomes, the study concludes that effective appraisal architectures directly elevate staff performance. It is recommended that management continuously utilize MBO to encourage employee buy-in, maintain multi-source 360-degree reviews to foster equity, and clearly outline actionable SMART goals to minimize workplace ambiguity
