Abstract

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY The demand for portable electronic devices, particularly laptops, has increased significantly over the years due to their versatility and essential role in both personal and professional activities. However, reliable access to electricity remains a challenge in many regions, particularly in remote or off-grid areas. This situation necessitates alternative energy solutions that are both sustainable and efficient. Solar energy, a clean and renewable resource, offers a promising alternative for powering electronic devices in such contexts. This study focuses on the design and construction of a solar-powered laptop charging system equipped with a display for real-time monitoring of the system's performance. The integration of solar power into a portable charging solution addresses the dual need for mobility and sustainability, making it ideal for use in areas with limited access to conventional power sources. Additionally, the incorporation of a display unit enhances user interaction by providing critical information about battery levels, charging status, and energy consumption, thus ensuring the system's reliability and effectiveness. Solar energy is increasingly recognized as a vital component in the global transition towards renewable energy sources. By harnessing solar power for everyday applications, such as charging laptops, this study contributes to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and minimizing environmental impact. Moreover, the system is designed to be scalable and adaptable, making it suitable for various power needs beyond laptop charging, including other portable devices and small electronics. The study aims to create a practical, user-friendly solution that not only meets the power requirements of a laptop but also promotes sustainable energy practices. Through detailed design, component selection, and system testing, this project demonstrates the feasibility of solar-powered charging systems in enhancing energy accessibility and reducing carbon footprints. Abraham, John 2018 A Solar Charging System is one that integrates an entire system, that consist of solar charging with efficient battery support as a reservoir for charging other batteries and even low power electronic devices. Considering the fact, the main feature of this power bank is for laptop charging, we need the most reliable solar panels and battery sets for the job that is why there are 2 main things to consider when choosing a solar panel; its size and the amount of power it can produce due to climate change. The battery capacity (measured in Ah) multiplied by the battery voltage to convert it to watt-hours (Wh). Lead acid batteries produces about 50% of its rated capacity while Li-ion batteries produces about 80% of its rated capacity. A laptop power bank requires more battery capacity compared to those used for charging cell phones only, putting this into consideration therefore, one requires more battery cells and multiple electronic components like the dc boosters to provide higher voltages needed to charge a laptop. The production of power banks all over the world has gone through great technological advancement over the years, from constructing power banks with lower mAh power (light weighted) to higher mAh power (heavy weighted), solar power banks, cordless charging power banks, flashlight power banks and the new invention laptop power banks. Due to how advanced technology has grown, cell phones have become Man’s best friend and major source of information and this has prompted the rapid construction, production and importation of phone power banks with higher mAh to extend the longevity of the phone’s battery. Laptop power banks are scarce and expensive to have access to because of how much battery capacity is required and how expensive they are. Therefore, companies produce in small quantity to increase demand and sell higher. Presently different varieties of power banks exist but this project introduces a “Solar Based Laptop Charging System”. 1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT In Nigeria, power Banks play a major role in our daily lives in terms of reliability and availability factor. This power bank system construction and design in-cooperates two system a backup battery which acts as an energy reservoir source in time of BEDC failure or rainy season where sunlight ray is minimal. While the other part is a mobile system that serves for daily usage for charging. 1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this project is to design and construct a Solar Based Laptop Charging System. The specific objectives to achieve the aim are; • To design a system that efficiently converts solar energy into electrical power suitable for charging a laptop. • To identify and select suitable components such as solar panels, charge controllers, batteries, DC-DC converters, and display units for the construction of the system • To physically assemble and integrate the selected components into a functional solar-powered laptop charging system 1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS This study covers the use of a Solar based laptop Charging System for the purpose of an independent reservoir energy source and a flexible system for charging laptops. The limitations however, includes; i. The battery capacity ii. The portability of the product 1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY This project’s result will be of benefit to a lot of persons, especially those living in rural areas where electricity is not readily available for charging their Laptops. It is also beneficial to office workers who require their laptops being on all the time to execute their daily tasks and job. 1.6 AREA OF APPLICATION Power banks can be used in every sector, from offices to homes to hospitals to schools and other places where phones and laptops exist and it applies to all users around the world. 1.7 OUTLINE OF THE REMAINING CHAPTERS Chapter two includes the literature review of past works and also major components utilized in the project work is introduced. Chapter three is the methodology and system design of the work involving the various methods and approach used, While Chapter Four introduces the implementation, result and testing of the work. Chapter five is the conclusion and finalized work of the project consisting of the Conclusions and Recommendations.
