Abstract

This study was to investigate the effect of hands−on and mind−on teaching strategies on the academic performance of Biology students in senior secondary schools in Mkpat Enin L.G.A of Akwa Ibom State. The research design adopted for the study was quasi experimental design. The population of the study consisted of all the 2413 Senior Secondary Two (SS2) for the year 2023/2024 academic session in all the sixteen (16) public secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government of Akwa Ibom State. The sample size for this study was one hundred (100) senior secondary (SS2) students obtained from two (2) co-educational public schools randomly selected from the sixteen (16) public co-educational secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government. Simple random sampling technique was adopted in selecting the students to be used for the study. The instrument employed in this study for data collection was a researcher made instrument tagged “Biology Performance Test (BPT). The validity of the instrument was done by three lecturers in Akwa Ibom State University. The scores obtained from the respondents was analyzed using Kuder Richardson (KR-21) formula to determine the reliability index which was observed to yield a reliability coefficient of 0.82. The data generated from the instruments was analyzed using mean and standard deviation while independent t-test was used for testing the null hypotheses. The result of the finding revealed that there is a significant difference in the mean performance scores of Biology students taught the concept of respiratory system using hands-on and minds-on instructional strategy and conventional strategy. The result of the finding also revealed that there is a significant difference in the mean performance score of male and female Biology students taught the concept of respiratory system using hands-on and minds-on instructional strategy. Based on the results obtained, hands-on and minds-on teaching strategy is the best method in promoting students’ academic achievement in the concept of cell in Biology. It was therefore recommended among others, Biology teachers should be encouraged to use hands-on–minds-on teaching strategy in delivering Biology instructions to promote achievement, develop creative and innovative skills for self-employability.
