CASE-BASED AND PEER TUTORING LEARNING STRATEGIES ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN MKPAT ENIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study was carried out to investigate the effect of case-based and peer tutoring
learning strategies on academic performance of biology students in secondary schools
in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. In order to achieve this purpose, three research
questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the
study was quasi-experimental design. The population for the study consisted of all
2,580 senior secondary two Biology students in all the 16 public secondary schools in
Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. A sample size of 103 SS2 Biology students was
selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. The researcher made
performance test tagged “Biology Students Performance Test (BSPT)” was the
instrument used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content
validity. A reliability coefficient of .86 was obtained for the instrument using KuderRichardson 20 formula. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research
questions while independent t-test was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of
this study showed that there is a significant difference in the mean performance scores
of Biology students taught concept of microorganism around us using case-based and
peer tutoring learning strategies in favour of case-based strategies; there is no
significant difference in the mean performance scores between male and female
Biology students taught concept of microorganism around us using Case-based
learning strategy; and there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores
of male and female Biology students taught concept of microorganism around us using
peer tutoring learning strategy. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded
that case-based learning strategy enhance students’ academic performance in Biology
more than peer tutoring learning strategy in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. It
was recommended among others that seminars, workshops and conferences should be
organized by the government to train teachers on the use of case-based and peer
tutoring strategies for teaching Biology concepts
