Abstract

Joseph Ayo Babalola University would like to create its own microfinance bank. This study presents the design proposal for a microfinance bank building for Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), located in Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State, with a focus on the application of passive security design strategies. As a growing institution committed to financial inclusion and academic development, JABU requires a secure, functional, and aesthetically pleasing banking facility that caters for staff, students, and the surrounding community. In response to this need, the study explores how passive security—defined as the use of architectural and environmental design elements to deter crime and enhance safety—can be effectively integrated into the design process. Key strategies examined include natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, controlled access, and strategic spatial planning. The research involves site analysis, study of user needs, review of relevant literature, and precedent studies of secure financial institutions. The resulting design aims to create a welcoming yet secure environment, reduce reliance on costly electronic security systems, and serve as a replicable model for similar institutions in rural or semi-urban settings. This work contributes to the discourse on sustainable security architecture by demonstrating how thoughtful design can promote safety and functionality in institutional banking infrastructure.
