KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTION OF POST-PARTUM PSYCHOSIS AMONGST PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING ANTENATAL CLINIC IN EDO SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE
Abstract
The research aimed to investigate the Knowledge and Perception of Post-Partum Psychosis Amongst Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinic in Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, Edo State. It was conducted through surveys, the study analyzed responses from 70 participants, focusing on demographic data, knowledge, prevalence, perception and attitude of women attending ante-natal clinic towards post partum depression. The results of the study showed that in Nigeria, there are gaps in the knowledge of pregnant women about the prevalence, assessment, and treatment of depression in the prenatal and postpartum periods, and almost 90% of Nigerian respondents do not know about postpartum depression. It is necessary to increase the level of education by motivating self‐learning or organizing awareness programmes. The findings shed light on crucial aspects of postpartum depression within the specific healthcare context. This study provides a comprehensive demographic profile of respondents, encompassing age, gender, education, and nursing experience. Notably, a substantial portion of respondents fell within the 25-44 age range, with a majority holding bachelor's degrees. This detailed demographic breakdown forms the foundational understanding of the sample population.
Responses regarding the prevalence of postpartum depression. The results indicated a noteworthy prevalence, with participants commonly reporting how it affects a woman negatively. A quantitative research method was applied. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. To close these gaps in knowledge, a strategy for training midwives and nurses in perinatal mental health and symptom screening needs to be developed. It is also necessary to develop clinical protocols for assessing the mental state of women in the perinatal period.
