EFFECTS OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CASSAVA (MANIHOT ESCULENTA CRANTZ) IN OBIO ΑΚΡΑ, AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
Field study was conducted at Akwa Ibom State University Obio Campus in August, 2021. to compare the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on growth and yield of cassava. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design in three replicates. The experimental treatments were inorganic fertilizer at 0, 200. 300 and 400 kg/ha NPK rates and organic fertilizers 5 and 7.5 1/haPM rates making the treatments seven (6). Data were collected on growth and yield parameters, and analyzed using analyses of variance. Significant means were compared using least significant difference at 5% probability level. Result revealed that PM treatment produced significantly taller plant, 208-41cm at 8 MAP while control produced plant height of 104.66 cm at 8MAP. Treatment of 10 t/ha PM had leaf area of 159 33. 162 40, and 180.25 and 201-36 cm² at 2. 4. 6 and 8 MAP. respectively while control had 81.76, 90.37, 93.80 and 97.60cm. respectively. Treatment of 10t/ha PM produced significant higher number of tuber per plant: 8.41 while treatments of 7.5 t/ha PM and 400 kg/ha NPK, produced 8:53 and 7.75 tubers per plant respectively. Treatment of 10 t/ha PM produced significantly higher tuber yield of 32.59 t/ha while 32.40t/ha and 31.11 t/ha were recorded in 7.5 t/ha PM and 400 kg/ha respectively. Control produced the least tuber yield. 12.37 t/ha. Application of 400 kg/ha NPK was recommended to farmer's who wish to apply inorganic fertilizer while 7.5 t/ha PM was recommends for those who may wish to apply organic fertilizer (PM) to their Cassava.
