INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON CRESCENT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ WILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE IN CIVIC ACTIVITIES
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of social media on Crescent University students’ willingness to participate in civic activities. The study adopted a survey research design and used a structured questionnaire to collect data from 100 students across various colleges within the university. Findings indicate that students are active users of social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, and Facebook. Results further show that social media enhances civic awareness, provides access to civic opportunities, and motivates participation in civic-related activities. However, barriers such as misinformation, privacy concerns, online harassment, lack of trust, and information overload affect students’ engagement. The study concludes that social media plays a significant role in promoting civic participation among students and recommends improved digital literacy, credible civic communication, and increased institutional support for online civic engagement.
