A PROJECT WORK ON USABILITY OF ADDITIVES IN THE AMELIORATION OF ABATTOIR SOIL ROD CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE
Abstract
In an attempt to promote a cleaner environment, the deployment of waste materials in soil amendment have been a major concern for civil engineers. This has necessitated the need for this research to show the impacts of exploring the usage of calcium carbide waste (CCR) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) in the amelioration of the geotechnical properties of abattoir soil. Series of laboratory tests such as the atterberg limit test (plastic limit, liquid limit and plasticity index), compaction (optimum moisture content and maximum dry density), sieve analysis and California bearing ratio (CBR) were implemented showing the plasticity index of the soil fluctuate with a peak value of 8.2% at 4% CCR and 8% POFA composition. The CCR was kept constant at 4% and the POFA varied at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12% thereby making both the MDD and OMC unstable, also varying POFA from 2%-12% and constant value of 4% for CCR an optimum value of 19.7% was gotten. Furthermore, Micro-structural test like X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) were carried out.
