Abstract

This study presents the design and construction of a distance meter that can measure the distance of an object using an ultrasonic transducer. Ultrasonic measurement of distance method is convenient compared to conventional means using tapes. This kind of measurement is particularly applicable to inaccessible areas where conventional method cannot be used such as such as high temperature, pressure and radiation zones. The proposed system uses ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04) interfaced to an Arduino Nano. Transmitted waves from the sensor are reflected back from the object and received by the sensor again. The distance is calculated based on the speed of sound and time taken of travel of the wave and displayed on an LCD screen interfaced to the Arduino. Results indicated that the system operates well in accordance with the design specification. Testing was conducted to measure several object distances using both the constructed distance meter and measuring tape to confirm the accuracy of the meter. The distance meter demonstrated high accuracy and precision in distance measurement, with an average error of ±0.2 cm. and consistent reliability across different scenarios. Compared with related works, the design achieved similar accuracy while maintaining simplicity and cost-effectiveness. The results confirm the system's potential as a reliable and affordable solution for distance measurement especially in inaccessible zones. Future improvements could be implemented to make it fit for medical and other applications.
