Abstract

ABSTRACT Energy drink (ED) consumption is steadily rising among youth, students, and the general public for a variety of odd reasons, such as improving memory and focus or preventing drowsiness. Supa Kommando, a commonly consumed energy drink in Nigeria, Quercetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the impact of Supa Kommando and quercetin intake on the cerebellum of pregnant Wistar rats. Twenty adult female pregnant Wistar rats weighing 90-110 grams were randomly divided into four experimental groups (n=>5 per group): control, Supa Kommando-treated, quercetin-treated, and a combination group receiving both Supa Kommando and quercetin. Treatments were administered orally from gestational day 6 (GD 6) to paturation. The control group received normal saline, Supa Kommando-treated group received 5Sml/kg, quercetin group received 20mg/kg of and both the Supa Kommando and quercetin group receiving 5ml/kg + 20mg/kg. The animals were subjected to neurobehaviour, elevated plus maze to access the locomotion. and anxiety. The animal was sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the brain was remove for histological analysis. Data were expressed as mean + SEM. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Turkey’s post hoc test for pairwise comparison were conducted. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. The results revealed a reduction in body weight, relative brain weight, the neurobehaviour assay indicate increase in anxiolytic related behavior at p < 0.05. The histology reveals a morphological change; vacolation in the molecular and purkinje layer. The supakomando and quercetin caused a synergetic effect on the cerebellum of pregnant rat.
