Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effect of selection and acquisition of information resources in academic libraries, using the Federal Polytechnic Offa Library, Kwara State, as a case study. The research examines how funding, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and staff involvement influence the acquisition of relevant library materials. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from library staff and students through structured questionnaires. Findings reveal that selection and acquisition practices at the Federal Polytechnic Offa Library are partly guided by institutional needs; however, inconsistencies in policy implementation, inadequate funding, and limited ICT infrastructure hinder effective collection development. The study also identifies challenges such as bureaucratic delays, insufficient professional training, and difficulties in balancing print and electronic resources. Despite these challenges, ICT has positively impacted resource accessibility and management. The study concludes that adequate funding, staff training, adoption of ICT, and policy reforms are essential for improving library resource acquisition. It recommends enhanced collaboration between librarians and academic departments to ensure the selection of relevant and current materials that support teaching, learning, and research.
