Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research work critically examines the roles and challenges faced by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (N.C.C) in the administration of copyright in Nigeria, while also proposing solutions to address these challenges and improve the efficacy of copyright protection in the country. The Nigerian Copyright Commission (N.C.C) plays a crucial role in the protection and enforcement of copyright laws in Nigeria. However, despite its mandate and efforts, several challenges hinder its effectiveness in administering copyright law. This research work identifies these challenges, inchuding inadequate funding, lack of awareness among stakeholders, limited human and technological resources, inefficient legal framework, and enforcement issues. To address these challenges, this research work proposes several recommendations. Firstly, there is a need for increased funding to enhance the capacity of the N.C.C in carrying out its mandate effectively. Additionally, there should be intensified efforts in educating stakeholders about copyright laws and their rights and obligations. Furthermore, the N.C.C should invest in improving its technological infrastructure to enhance its monitoring and enforcement capabilities. Moreover. there is a need for legislative reforms to strengthen copyright laws and provide adequate protection for creators and rights holders. This includes amendments to existing laws to align with international standards and emerging technological trends. Additionally, there should be collaboration between the N.C.C, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to improve enforcement mechanisms and combat piracy and infringement effectively. In conclusion, this research work underscores the importance of addressing the roles and challenges of the N.C.C in the administration of copyright in Nigeria to foster creativity, innovation, and economic growth By implementing the proposed recommendations, the N.C.C can enhance its effectiveness in protecting and enforcing copyright laws, thereby promoting a conducive environment for creativity, investment, and cultural development in Nigeria.
