Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the linguistic strategies employed in European football commentary, with a particular focus on how graphic action is conveyed through spoken and written language. The aim was to identify and analyze the phonological, morphological, semantic, and rhetorical features used by commentators to engage audiences and convey dynamic match events. Drawing on sociolinguistic concepts, including code-switching, code-mixing, and multilingualism, the objectives of the study were to explore how language varies across different commentators and leagues, and how stylistic devices enhance the communicative impact of football discourse. The study adopted a qualitative research design and was grounded in Variation Theory and Multimodal Communication Theory. Data were collected from televised matches across major platforms such as SuperSport, ESPN, and the UEFA Champions League, and were analyzed using descriptive and thematic techniques. Findings revealed that commentators frequently employed rhetorical devices such as repetition, alliteration, hyperbole, and parallelism, alongside features like code-switching and slang to heighten excitement and emotional engagement. The study concluded that these strategies significantly contribute to audience immersion and entertainment. It recommended that further research should explore gender differences in commentary styles and expand to other global leagues for broader comparative insights. Keywords: Football Commentary, Language Strategies, UEFA Champions League, Graphic Action
