Abstract

This study examined the impact of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of History in senior secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, with a sample of one hundred (100) History students selected from five senior secondary schools in the study area. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings revealed that instructional materials are available and adequate for teaching History in most senior secondary schools, and that the use of instructional materials significantly enhances students’ academic performance in History. The study further revealed that the use of instructional materials improves students’ interest, participation, and motivation in learning History. However, the findings also indicated that teachers face certain challenges in utilizing instructional materials effectively during teaching. Based on the findings, the study concluded that instructional materials play a significant role in improving teaching effectiveness and students’ academic performance in History. It was therefore recommended that school authorities and government should ensure the adequate provision of instructional materials, organize training programmes for teachers, and provide necessary support to facilitate the effective use of instructional materials in History teaching.
