NURSES MIGRATION AND ITS EFFECT ON HEALTH-CARE IN FMC OWO, ONDO STATE
Abstract
Abstract: This study investigated nurses’ migration and its effects on healthcare delivery at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria. The study was conducted to determine the migration intentions of nurses, identify factors influencing migration, examine preferred destination countries, and assess the impact of migration on healthcare delivery.
A descriptive cross-sectional research design was adopted. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to nurses working at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods.
Findings revealed that a considerable number of nurses expressed intentions to migrate abroad in search of better remuneration, improved working conditions, career advancement opportunities, and enhanced quality of life. The study also identified several factors facilitating migration, including inadequate welfare packages, poor working environments, limited professional growth opportunities, and economic challenges. Nurse migration was found to contribute to staff shortages, increased workload for remaining healthcare workers, reduced efficiency, and challenges in the delivery of quality healthcare services.
The study concluded that nurse migration has significant implications for healthcare delivery and workforce sustainability in Nigeria. It recommended improved remuneration, better working conditions, enhanced career development opportunities, and supportive government policies aimed at retaining qualified nurses within the country.
Introduction: Nurses play a vital role in the healthcare system and constitute a significant proportion of the healthcare workforce. However, the increasing migration of nurses from developing countries to developed nations has become a major challenge for healthcare systems. This migration, often referred to as brain drain, contributes to workforce shortages and affects the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. In Nigeria, the growing trend of nurse migration has raised concerns regarding its impact on healthcare delivery. This study therefore examined nurses’ migration and its effects on healthcare delivery at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria.
