ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY PROFILE OF ESCHERICHIA COLI FROM 0-5- YEAR-OLD PATIENTS IN IMO STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
One of the most prevalent health issues in developing nations, particularly in Africa, is diarrhoeal disease. The aim of this study was to examine the antibiotic sensitivity profile of Escherichia coli from 0-5 year old patients in Imo State. The study was conducted in the three geopolitical zones of Imo State, including Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe. Fifty (50) samples of diarrheal stool samples were collected from each zone, giving a total of 150 samples. The morphological, biochemical characteristics of the isolates were determined. Using guideline of Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute, A total of 121 Escherichia coli were isolated. With the highest from Okigwe zone (45), Orluzone 40 and the least Owerri0 zone 36. The highest sensitivity of isolates from diarrheal stool samples was 25.0% with Ciprofloxacin. Most of the E. coli isolates from the three Zones of Imo State showed 100% resistance to Augmentin, Ceftriaxone, Cefepime, Aztreonam and Meropenem. There was no significant difference in antibiotic profile of isolates from each of the zones. There is potential transmission of enteric pathogens between different samples and zones of Imo State. More campaigns and restrictive measures including prevention of open grazing, antibiotic abuse and open defecation, should be immediately implemented to reverse the present trends in Imo State.
