DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF A PELLETIZING MACHINE FOR LIVESTOCK FEED
Abstract
The rising cost of livestock feed and limited access to feed processing technologies in developing countries have made on-farm feed production a priority for smallholder farmers. Pelletizing livestock feed improves handling, reduces waste, and increases nutrient efficiency. However, the cost of commercial pelletzing machines remains out of reach for many rural farmers. This project focuses on the design and fabrication of a pelletizing machine for livestock feed using locally available materials and simple mechanical systems. The machine features a hopper, screw conveyor, compression barrel, die unit, and is powered by an electric motor. Performance testing was conducted using broiler mash and starch binder at varying volumes. The machine achieved up to 90% efficiency with minimal energy consumption. The results suggest that the fabricated unit is practical, affordable, and suitable for small-scale livestock feed production in resource-constrained environments.
