Abstract

This study investigates the application of spatial semiotics in the architectural design of photography-centered creative environments to enhance functionality and stimulate creative expression. The research addresses the gap in understanding how architectural elements—such as spatial configurations, lighting, and materiality can be intentionally designed to communicate meaning and influence user experience in specialized creative settings. A qualitative methodology was employed, combining case study analysis of existing photography hubs with theoretical frameworks from architectural semiotics. Key cases, including the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and the International Center of Photography, were examined to identify semiotic strategies and spatial workflows. Findings reveal that deliberate architectural symbolism such as light modulation, spatial sequencing, and material contrasts can enhance creative productivity, user engagement, and cultural resonance. The study concludes that photography-centered environments benefit from a semiotic approach, where design elements mirror photographic principles (framing, focus, exposure). Recommendations include integrating climate-responsive strategies, flexible spatial configurations, and localized cultural motifs to create meaningful, adaptive, and inspiring creative hubs. This research contributes a framework for architects to design spaces that actively participate in the creative process.
