INFLUENCE OF ‘IMOTOTO’ RADIO PROGRAM OF TNT 102.5FM ON WASTE DISPOSAL MANAGEMENT OF RESIDENTS OF OFFA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KWARA STATE
Abstract
Effective waste disposal management remains a pressing environmental concern in many
developing regions, including Offa Local Government, Kwara State, Nigeria. This study examines
the influence of the Imototo radio program on residents' waste disposal management practices. The
program, designed to educate and sensitize the public on proper waste management techniques,
serves as a case study to evaluate the role of mass media in promoting environmental awareness
and behavioral change. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, utilizing surveys, focus
group discussions, and in-depth interviews with residents and stakeholders. Findings reveal that
Imototo has significantly improved residents' knowledge of appropriate waste disposal methods,
leading to enhanced compliance with environmental sanitation practices. The study also identifies
barriers to effective waste management, such as inadequate infrastructure, limited government
support, and cultural attitudes. Despite these challenges, the program's impact is evident in
fostering community engagement and a more proactive approach to waste disposal. The research
underscores the importance of leveraging mass media for public enlightenment campaigns and
calls for sustained efforts, including collaboration between media outlets, local authorities, and
community members, to achieve sustainable waste management practices.
