Abstract

Some selected vegetables consumed in Nigeria were analyzed to determine their heavy metals using standard analytical procedure. These vegetables are (Ugwu (Telfairia occidentalis), water leaf (Talinum triangulare Jacq.), soko (Celosia argentea L.), Jute leaves (Corchorus olitorius) and arowojeja (Amaranthus cruentus) show the low concentrations of heavy metals, with Zinc (0.534 – 3.707 ppm) being the most abundant, particularly in evening samples. While Cadmium (0.002- 0.046 ppm), Chromium (0.009- 0.055pp), Nickel (0.003- 0.015 ppm), and Lead (0.002 – 0.018ppm) are present in trace amounts, their higher concentrations in evening samples suggest potential accumulation from environmental factors. Most levels are within safe limits. Proper washing and sourcing from less polluted areas are essential to minimize heavy metal exposure through vegetables.
