POSTMODERNIST INTERPRETATION OF GENDER WAR: A STUDY OF CHIBUNDU ONUZU'S WELCOME TO LAGOS
Abstract
This project
explores the postmodernist interpretation of the gender war as depicted in Chibundu
Onuzo's novel, Welcome to Lagos. In a world where traditional gender roles are
increasingly challenged, the study delves into how characters in the novel adapt and
transcend these roles amidst conflict and adversity. The research employs a
multidisciplinary approach, combining literature analysis and gender studies to
provide a nuanced understanding of postmodernist gender discourse. The findings
reveal the transformative journeys of characters like Chike and Fineboy, who defy
conventional gender norms, highlighting the adaptability and fluidity of gender roles in
the face of social and political turmoil. This postmodernist interpretation accentuates
the intersectionality of identity, emphasizing the complex interplay of gender with
factors such as race, nationality, and social roles. The study also underscores the
resilience and agency exhibited by characters such as Blessing and Yemi in the face of
gender-based violence.––
These characters adapt to their circumstances, challenging traditional gender
expectations and providing new perspectives on agency and survival. Welcome to
Lagos subverts traditional gender roles, emphasizing that individuals should have the
freedom to express themselves and pursue roles based on their abilities and interests,
rather than being confined by rigid gender expectations. The novel portrays fluid
gender interactions and encourages a more inclusive and diverse understanding of
gender expression. This project recognizes the significance of questioning societal
norms and encourages critical examination of traditions that perpetuate inequality or
harm. It also highlights the adaptability of gender roles in various cultural contexts.
suggesting that cultural norms surrounding gender can evolve and adapt as societies
change Ultimately, Welcome to Lagos illustrates the power of empathy and emotional
expression in challenging traditional masculinity. The research contributes to the
broader discourse on postmodernism and gender studies, offering novel insights and
perspectives on the adaptability of gender roles and their intersection with other
facets of identity. In conclusion, this project provides a comprehensive understanding
of postmodernist interpretations of the gender war in
"Welcome to Lagos" and highlights the adaptability, resilience, and transformative
potential of individuals in the face of conflict and adversity. The findings encourage a
more inclusive.
