INFLUENCE OF RADIO POLITICAL PROGRAMMES AND YOUTH’S PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS IN OFFA LGA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the influence of radio political programs on youth political participation in Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. With the increasing role of media in shaping political awareness, especially among the youth, this research examines how radio political programs affect political engagement, knowledge, and voting behavior. A total of 400 respondents were surveyed using a structured questionnaire, focusing on key areas such as the awareness and understanding of political issues, engagement in political activities, and the type of content that motivates youth participation in politics. The findings reveal that radio political programs significantly contribute to enhancing political knowledge, encourage youth to participate in voting, and foster dialogue and discussions among young listeners. Moreover, it was found that interactive segments and the inclusion of youth-oriented topics significantly boost engagement. However, the study also identifies barriers such as time constraints and language preferences that may hinder the full impact of these programs. The research concludes by recommending improvements, including increased interactive content and collaborations with educational institutions, to enhance the effectiveness of radio political programs in mobilizing youth for political participation.
