CARCASS CHARACTERISTICS OF BROILER CHICKENS FED VARYING LEVELS OF TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA) POWDER
Abstract
The study was conducted to investigate the dietary effect of turmeric (curcuma longa)
powder supplementation as feed addictive on carcass characteristics of broiler chickens for a
period of 6 weeks. A total number of 150-day old broiler chicks (ross) divided into five
experimental rations designated as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 containing 10 birds per treatment
with replicates viz, having the treatment supplemented with 0g, 0.1g, 0.2g, 0.3g, and 0.4g
turmeric powder per litres of water respectively. At the end of the 6th week, the birds were
starved for 3hours and slaughtered and properly bled and then scalded using water at
temperature at 60degrees Celsius. Carcass quality like (Live weight, bled weight and dress
weight) were measured and weighed. The cut-up parts (Head, Shank, Thigh, Breast, Neck,
Wings and Drumsticks), Organs like (Hearts, Kidneys, Lungs, Liver, Bile, Gizzards, Intestines,
Crop, Pancreas and Proventiculus) were weighed. Abdominal fats were weighed using an
electronic sensitive scale. The mean body weight per birds significantly increased (p< 0.05) in
turmeric supplemented group compared to control, the mean value of cut-parts and visceral
organ showed significant (p
