Abstract

ABSTRACT This project presents the design and implementation of a GSM-based home security system developed to enhance residential safety through real-time intrusion detection and alert mechanisms. The system integrates a Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor, microcontroller, GSM module, buzzer and power supply unit to form a complete and functional security solution. The PIR sensor is used to detect human movement within a defined area, while the microcontroller processes the input signals and initiates appropriate responses. Upon detection of unauthorised access, the system activates a local alarm and sends a Short Message Service (SMS) notification to the user through the GSM module. The methodology adopted involved the design of the system architecture, development of circuit and block diagrams, selection of suitable components and implementation of control software for system coordination. The system was constructed and tested under different conditions to evaluate its performance. The results obtained showed that the system is capable of detecting intrusion accurately and transmitting alert messages with minimal delay, although its performance is influenced by network availability and environmental conditions. The developed system is cost-effective, reliable and easy to operate, making it suitable for use in residential environments. Despite minor limitations such as occasional false triggering and dependence on GSM network coverage, the system achieved its intended objectives. The project demonstrates the practical application of embedded systems and mobile communication technology in improving home security and provides a foundation for further enhancements and future development.
