Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated teachers’ needs and the factors influencing retention in public secondary schools in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State. The research examined welfare conditions, motivation, workload, professional development, and school environment as determinants of teacher retention. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from 120 teachers across six public secondary schools using a structured questionnaire. The study found that inadequate welfare, irregular promotion, limited training opportunities, poor school facilities, and heavy workload significantly contributed to teachers’ intention to leave. Recommendations include improved welfare packages, regular training, better infrastructure, and supportive administrative practices. The study provides practical insights for policymakers seeking to improve teacher stability and instructional quality.
