TOPOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM OF ATIBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT SECRETARIAT, ATIBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OYO, OYO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Atiba local government secretariate faces challenges in planning and resources mamagement
due to outdated topographic data and lack of centralized system, this study aims to develop a
Topographical Information System (TIS) for Atiba Local Government Secretariat in Oyo Town,
utilizing modern surveying techniques, including Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
receivers and Geographical Information System (GIS) technology to provide accurate and
accesible spatial data. The Objectives of this study are to design a geodatabase, collect and
analyze geometric and attribute data, and to develop a GIS based Topographial mapping system.
To achieve these objectives, the methodology involved field data collection comprising geometric
data and attribute data. The geometric data were acquired using GNSS receiver in Real Time
Kinematic (RTK) mode, through the process of boundary survey, detailing, and obtaining
spotheight simuiteneously, and attribute data were obtained through social surveys and physical
obsevation. This technique was chosen because of its ability to deliver accurate and reliable
topographical data. A model database was generated and structure using the relational table
format containing rows and columns. The collected geometric data was processed using various
software tools, including Microsoft excel for organizing raw data, Notepad for basic data
formats and scripting, Civil 3D 2022 for plotting boundaries and details, Surfer 15 for terrain
modeling and surface analysis, and ArcGIS 10.6.1 for GIS-based spatial analysis. Queries were
performed using spatial and Aspatial analysis techniques, allowing for the extraction of
informtion based on specific geographic and attribute parameters , such as elevation levels,
vegetation distribution and infrastructure location. This study produces outputs including contour
maps, slope maps, watershed analysis, aspect maps, vegetation distribution maps, 3D terrain
models, shaded relief maps, and viewshed analysis, all of which contribute to sustainable land
use planning in the Atiba Local Government Secretariat. Based on these findings, it is
recommended that flood-prone areas be equipped with proper drainage systems, and that
infrastructure development prioritizes stable, elevated locations. Overall, these
recommendations will help ensure that the Atiba Local Government Secretariat develops in a
sustainable, resilient, and well-planned manner
