THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN INCREASED TRUANCY RATE AMONG ABDU GUSAU POLYTECHNIC STAFF AND STUDENTS IN TIME OF INSECURITY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research investigates the relationship between digital media use, insecurity, and increased truancy rates among Abdu Gusau Polytechnic staff and students. Through a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and content analysis, the study examines the extent of digital media consumption, the impact of insecurity on media usage, and the correlation between these factors and truancy.
Findings reveal a significant increase in digital media use among students and staff during periods of insecurity. Exposure to violent content, distractions, and online misinformation has been identified as contributing to decreased academic focus and motivation. The confluence of insecurity and digital media use has created a conducive environment for truancy, leading to lower attendance rates and academic performance.
The research proposes recommendations to address these challenges, including digital media literacy education, enhanced campus security, psychological support services, community engagement, and policy interventions. By implementing these strategies, Abdu Gusau Polytechnic can mitigate the negative effects of digital media and insecurity, fostering a more conducive learning environment for its students and staff.
